Preparing for Advising

  1. Examine your progress in DegreeWorks.

    Note that some classes can count toward multiple requirements. We will discuss this in more detail during our advising meeting. Write down questions as they come up.

  2. Identify possible courses for next semester.

    The Schedule Worksheet can help you design your week plan.

  3. Think about long-term personal and career goals.

    Employment: do you want to teach, work in industry, or something else?
    Personal Growth: do you want to build a skill or learn something new?
    Do you want to go to graduate school at some point in the future?

  • Two required graduate courses (611,621), eight graduate electives
  • Up to two cross listed undergraduate courses can count
    (302511, 402521)
  • Exit requirement: select one from the following
    • Two Comprehensive exams
    • Thesis (Take 1-2 semesters of Math 691 as your electives)
    • Internship and capstone (Take 1-2 semesters of Math 690 as your electives)

Sample Pathway

All courses in MATH unless otherwise noted. UME = Undergraduate Mathematics Elective, GE = Graduate Elective.

  • Fall: 161, 180
  • Spring: 162, 202, Comp 150/151
  • Fall : 301, 261, Science Sequence I
  • Spring: 316, 408/416, Math 3021, Science Sequence II

  • Fall: 401, UME, 611 (Graduate Algebra I), GE

  • Spring: UME, 5212, 6123 (Graduate Algebra II)

  • Fall: 621 (Graduate Analysis I), GE, GE

For advanced students on a different cycle, the following adapted sequence may be appropriate.

  • Fall : 301, 401
  • Spring: 5111, 5212
  • Fall: 611 (Graduate Algebra I), 621 (Graduate Analysis I),

  1. Students must have taken 301 and 401 before they can register for Math 511, the graduate version of Math 302 

  2. Math 521 is the graduate version of Math 402 

  3. Or any other graduate elective
